The 33-storey Great Eagle Centre, an iconic office and retail building in the popular Wan Chai commercial district, adjacent to the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, was completed in 1983. Schindler team modernized the original 14 elevators, which were equipped with previous generation Aconic controllers and motor-generator sets, with new controllers, gearless machines, highly efficient regenerative drives with Power Factor One (PF1) inverters and the PORT Technology, a cutting-edge intelligent transit management system, to improve traffic efficiency and provide tenants with a smooth and modern ride experience.

The modernization work started in October 2013 and was completed in May 2015 with minimal disturbance to the building's tenants and to the satisfaction of the customer. "Our key challenge was to convert the conventional elevators of this highly populated landmark commercial building to the latest state-of-the-art system, while leaving the overall elevator operations unaffected. The success of the project relied heavily on the immaculate planning and close coordination with the customer. The 'Project of the Year' award by Elevator World is a welcome recognition to our team that has worked tirelessly to ensure smooth and timely execution of the project," says Noky Wong, Managing Director of Schindler Lifts Hong Kong.
