BEIJING, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Hudong.com, the world's largest Chinese encyclopedia website free to everyone, today announced that the company donated the Chinese trademark of Wikipedia to the Wikimedia Foundation. "The rapid development of Hudong.com demonstrates the increasing momentum of the wiki-enabled Chinese encyclopedia website," said Mr. Jimmy Wales, honorary chairman of the Wikimedia Foundation. "The major task that lies ahead for Chinese encyclopedia websites is determining how to expand their international influence."
"As the founder of Wikipedia, Mr. Jimmy Wales has been devoted to achieving the goal of creating a free encyclopedia available to every single person. In addition, Mr. Wales has championed the observance of neutrality on Wikipedia. Hudong.com has maintained these same principles since its founding in 2005," said Dr. Pan Haidong, founder and CEO of Hudong.com. "Hudong.com registered the Chinese Wikipedia trademark in 2007 in an effort to ensure the sound development of Wikipedia in China and avoid the undesirable consequences brought by any malicious trademark registrations. The donation of the trademark to the Wikimedia Foundation not only marks both parties' common desire to promote free knowledge nationally and internationally, but also our concerted efforts to aid the development of wiki websites in China."
